4X4 ADVENTURES IN ASSOCIATION WITH DAVID BOWYER’S
OFF ROAD CENTRE OFFERS A RANGE OF OFF ROAD DRIVING COURSES, WINCHING AND
RECOVERY COURSES, AS WELL AS DRIVE ROUND DAYS AND GUIDED SOCIAL TOURS OFF ROAD.
COURSES
For many years
James Trembath
has been teaching people from all walks of life
how to handle their 4x4s in off road conditions as well as winching and recovery
techniques. Training includes not only those who own a 4x4, but also corporate
and Public Utility clients with a wide range of 4x4 vehicles.
James has a wealth of experience in training individuals and groups of clients
at David Bowyer’s Off Road Centre in Devon and has done so for nearly thirteen
years. Whilst working for ten years with Land Rover Experience, he won their
Global instructor of the year competition in 2016. James also competed in winch
challenge events, winning the national series twice, with many other wins and
podium finishes to his credit. In the past James also used to run his own
competitive events. He now competes with the Ultra4 teams across Europe.
David Bowyer, well known in off road and recovery circles built and founded his
off road driving course 35 years ago way back in 1986. David’s training course
was Britain’s first off road training facility and more than 10,000 people have
participated over the years. It is now a very mature off road driver training
area and a haven for wild life. Having built the course with a range of earth
moving machinery, he planted over 1,000 trees and shrubs, it encompasses: rough
tracks, steep banks, hills, side slopes, ditches, ‘V’ gullies, humps, muddy
rutted tracks, articulation areas and water routes.
All this makes a superb arena to learn how to handle your 4x4 in off road
conditions safely. If you are attending a winching and recovery day as well,
there are several areas where you can learn how to winch and use recovery
equipment, and where and how to stow away the latter.
Not only do you learn to read the ground ahead, but you can also have
instruction on how to read and use ordinance survey maps, how to prepare and go
green laning. Whereas James’s interest has been in designing and building
successful winch challenge trucks, David’s interest has been in researching
green lanes, and driving them for over thirty years throughout the whole of
Wales, Cumbria, Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire and Northumberland.
David, like James has a wealth of experience and by enrolling on a course it
gives you the perfect opportunity to talk about all things to do with owning a
4x4. Things like Green Laning, tyres, suspension, transmission upgrades, CB,
winches and recovery equipment. James has had great success building off road
vehicles in the past, and has a very much hands on approach. With respect to
recovery equipment, David founded
Goodwinch many years ago and although he sold
the business three years ago, he knows a thing or two on the winching front.
David is well placed to give you all the advice you need.
Off Road driving Courses cost from £255 for two people (or one if you prefer) a
day in your own vehicle. For a winching and recovery day the cost is from £305 a
day with all the equipment again for up to two people or you can elect to
conduct the training 1:1. There are no double bookings for either of the above
courses, so it’s just the two of you with the instructor for the day.
For larger groups you can have both James and David training at the Centre. We
also have other professional off road driving instructors available.

DRIVE ROUND DAYS
For over thirteen years 4x4 Adventures has been organising Drive Round Days
(DRDs). These days are for those with prior experience and are used to driving
off road. Lead by James Trembath, there are many tracks during the day to prove
and hone your skills. 4x4Adventures uses two quite different sites over the
course of the year; if you join in at one site, you are sure to go to the other
later! All super fun and very sociable too being with like minded people.
These
days are a convoy escorted Driving Day, across private estates on purpose
designed tracks. They are not for the faint hearted, and will push your vehicle
to the limit. Bypasses available. Prior Off road experience needed. Pre-book
only.
The cost is £55 per vehicle at either venue.

GREEN LANING IN WALES
Once a year 4x4 Adventures also organise a Wales Green Laning and social
weekend, based in a pleasant hotel in Mid Wales. This is your chance to be lead
along some great green lanes, climbing up through the mountains and along the
valleys, mainly on rocky tracks and gravel tracks with a few river crossings.
You will drive across moors and through forests, all with great views, so take
your camera.
The weekend starts with a meeting up at the hotel late Saturday afternoon and
having a good meal in the evening. After breakfast on the Sunday morning, you
convoy in small groups to drive some of the best lanes in Wales.
The cost is approx £275 for two people in one vehicle and includes dinner, bed
and breakfast.

SOCIAL MORNINGS AT THE CENTRE
Finally, back to David Bowyer’s Off Road Centre. For those who have some
experience in using their 4x4 off road, roughly once a month we are running an
Off Road Driving and Social Mornings for those looking to gain more experience.
This event gives a good insight into going Green Laning. We meet at The Waie Inn
in the centre of Zeal Monachorum for a briefing. Then we convoy over the hill
and down to David’s Off Road Centre, where he leads you around his mature course
giving you lots of opportunity to put your off road driving skills into
practice.
First, David will lead around the main route, followed by driving the whole
route again, but in the opposite direction, then some of the more difficult
sections, which, if it doesn’t go to plan may involve some winching; where David
will be happy to assist!
This is the perfect chance again to talk about maps and green laning. In fact it
is a bit like learning to Green Lane on his private ground.
The cost is just £40 per vehicle. Meals are not included.
